Tools & Trade Workshop

Did you know you can write off your paint? Your shoes? Your notebooks? Your records? How about: declaring art income can lead to more tax returns! And what’s this HST thing anyway?

Anyone who is being paid for their art should know how to track their dollars, what to report and how to write off costs of your art. If you want to understand how to better manage your money and file your taxes then this workshop is for you!

The session will cover basic points about budgeting, provide an overview about the HST, and teach how to report income and claim artistic expenses.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR: JULIA STANLEY
Julia is a Chartered Accountant and a manager with Ginsberg Gluzman Fage & Levitz, LLP where she has gained a wide range of experience. She has worked with not-for-profit organizations, small businesses and medical professionals. Julia first joined GGF&L in 2001 as a co-op student and after graduating from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Commerce she continued on to obtain her Chartered Accountancy designation.

Ottawa native Eternia returns home to headline a showcase of Ottawa MCs as the House of PainT releases Vol. 1 of the 613 Sessions - a compilation of works by 22 MCs from across the city.

Opening for Eternia will be 613 locals Hyfidelik,
Jesse Dangerously and Homebased.  Tunes by DJ Memetic

ABOUT ETERNIA:
Two time Juno-nominated MC Eternia continues to knock down barriers & trail-blaze across the globe for Canadian Hip Hop music. She has toured extensively in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Australia, & Europe; those that are lucky enough to catch her on stage credit her as one of the best live performers they have witnessed.

In 2010, Eternia released her 5th full-length recording on Fat Beats Records with “DJ Premier affiliatedCanadian super-producer MoSS” (NOW Magazine). “AT LAST” was met with critical acclaim, features guest appearances by some of Hip Hop’s elite - Ras Kass, Rah Digga, Lady of Rage, Jean Grae, Tiye Phoenix, Joell Ortiz, Termanology, Reef the Lost Cauze & more – and was named one of the Top 25 Albums of 2010 by the legendary DJ Premier.

Tools & Trade Workshop

CONNECTING WITH YOUTH THRU HIP HOP - TIPS, TOOLS and LESSONS LEARNED


This is a WORKSHOP SESSION with STEPHEN 'BUDDHA' LEAFLOOR, MSW, founder of BluePrint4Life. Buddha has 27+ years experience using hiphop to engage youth.

This session will cover a number of ways in which hiphop can and is being used for youth outreach, alternative education and community development. Tips and tools for turning an idea into an effective program will be covered, as will lessons learned and common mistakes to avoid.

 

If you are an urban artist interested in working with youth, a youth worker looking to incorporate hiphop into your work, or a teacher open to using hiphop in the classroom this session is for you!

 Feel free to spread the word about this exciting opportunity.  All capacity building sessions are free or by donation.

House of PainT 2011 Event Schedule

The Festival will run from Wednesday August 3rd to Sunday August 7th.
The MAIN EVENT (under the bridge) is on Saturday August 6th.

House of PainT 2011

"CONNECT"

This year, Ottawa's biggest independent Hip Hop festival will take place during the week of August 3rd to August 7th!  The main event will be on August 6th, under the Dunbar Bridge near Carleton University as always.

The theme for this year is "CONNECT"- to celebrate the ties of community that can bring together people of all ages, sexes, cultures and interests in an urban setting and celebrate the value of diversity and grassroots activism.
